Kota Kinabalu Trip

4:24 PM

Yes! Finally I'm done with Mount Kinabalu hike! Of course must blog about it right... It's a once-in-a-life time experience (I doubt I'm going for a second time)! But I think I'm separating this trip into two posts or else it might be too long. So this post is gonna be about the foods we ate and places we went in KK.

It was an free and easy trip because we didn't wanna use up our energy before the hike. And to be honest, KK is just a small city without much things to do (I mean things that we're interested in or know of). So, I didn't really plan in mind what to do there, just follow the itinerary that HY made with all my heart haha. Basically, we just did a little food-hunting and shopping for our Mount Kinabalu hike.

Put this picture first because I want it to show up at my homepage haha

So we reached KK International Airport (KKIA) around 10 AM. The car rental guy sent the Toyota Innova that we rent to us at the airport. The rental fee as RM184 / day after discount.

First stop was of course food coz there were two foodies in our group. Besides, don't expect to do some good sightseeing in KK coz the places recommended on guide maps / tourism websites were just mehhh. So, we can only turn to food lol. Fortunately enough, the food here in KK was not bad.

First stop was Kedai Kopi Yee Fung @ Gaya Street. They are famous with their laksa of distinct taste. As we were not really hungry, we ordered four different dishes to share among ourselves so that we could try everything.

Yee Fung Ngau Chap

I would say this Yee Fung Ngau Chap is the best among the four dishes we ordered. I'm not a fan of animal organs but the soup base is so rich in herbal aroma and the meat was so tender! Some would say it tastes similar to Bak Kut Teh but I think it's somehow different. It reminded me of the Beef Noodle that I ate in Hong Kong (bad service, chewy meat).

Yee Fung Laksa

Their star dish - Yee Fung Laksa. True enough, it has a distinct taste which I don't really know how to describe and it's even harder to describe now because I couldn't remember xD. But overall, I liked it. BTW some people prefer the Penang type asam laksa so FYI this Yee Fung Laksa is not asam laksa, its curry laksa. I never really like asam laksa. Oh BTW noticed the generous amount of parsley on top of the laksa?? I dislike the taste of parsley but somehow for this dish, it blends well with the soup taste so I didn't have to pick them out!

And this one is... I think normal Bee Hoon soup lol not bad also can clean your taste buds in between dishes

We also ordered Claypot Chicken Rice which was nice also but nothing special to talk about.

After Yee Fung, we went to Imago Shopping Mall or more food-hunting (OMG I cannot remember!). But anyway, nothing important so let's just move on.

In the evening, we went to the Sunset bar at Shangri-la Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa. Technically, we didn't go into the bar, we were just strolling outside the bar haha because you have to pay RM25 per person to get in and can choose a drink.

This place was filled with China tourists! I even saw one taking pictures for her stem cell products there lol. But the view was gorgeous! See for yourself!

That's the Sunset bar I was talking about. It's sort of like seated in the sea with a small road that leads to it from the shore.

A portrait HY took for me. It would be perfect if her hands weren't shaky and if my smile was more natural.

Haha imagine if I can lay on this bed and have the perfect view of sunset. Sorry, charges apply.

A picture I took for my friends, nice or not?

After that, we met up with HY's friend, Daniel and he brought us to Welcome Seafood Restaurant. Yeah the famous seafood restaurant that everyone must go if visit KK. Didn't take any pictures, still waiting for pictures from friends. Overall, the seafood was nice, fresh and cheap compared to here.

After dinner, Daniel brought us to one of the biggest event in KK. If I didn't remember wrongly it was something like a pre-Kaamatan food fest. It was held in Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) Cultural Village @ Penampang, Sabah. Pesta Kaamatan is a form of harvest festival for the Sabahans.

If you like pork, beer and loud music, then this is the place for you lol. If not, you can come and experience the vibe anyway. We were quite lucky we visited KK during their harvest festival. There were many stalls selling wild hogs, beef, lamb, pork and beer. We found a beer stall with loud music and then just sat down there for around 30 minutes to 1 hour? Eating BBQ wild hog meat, pork satay, lamb, drinking beer and blasting our ears with loud music. Didn't take any picture so if you want to have a sneak peek at the place can visit this website: Pre-kaamatan Food Fest @ KDCA

Day 2 was a day for island-hopping. Before we head to the jetty, we had Sang Nyuk Mian as breakfast at Kedai Kopi Jia Siang @ Lintas Square.

No bad la taste like thicker Dry Wan Tan Noodle

Pork, meatballs and organs (can choose without organs also)

We actually spent the whole day in two islands (Pulau Sapi and Pulau Manukan). Not because there were a lot activities to do there, it was actually because we had to wait for boats and the weather to turn good.

I also didn't take any good photo at the islands because frankly I've been to better islands before. These two islands were just too commercialised, so many Chinese and Korean tourists! While we were at Manukan island, it started raining heavily. We were stranded on the island because it was too dangerous for any boat to be sailing. We waited until 4PM only can we leave the island.

Here's a pic taken with friend's phone. Post this just because I look good in this picture lol. Bought that straw hat for RM25! So expensive and also not really my style. But the sun was too hot so it was necessary! but hey the hat actually looks quite nice lah and big enough to block the sun! Oh and sunglasses from Daiso lol because I didn't bring mine to KK. The quality was okay!

For dinner, we went to Fatt Kee Restaurant @ Ang's Hotel. They are famous with their chicken wings. I think we ordered 8 dishes and most of them were good. The price was quite cheap too.

Day 3 was Kundasang day! We droved 45 minutes to Tuaran and had Mee Tuaran for breakfast. Tasted not bad.

On the way to Desa Dairy Farm, we stopped by at the roadside for wild hog meat grilled on the spot by Sabahan villagers! You can spot the stalls with the words "Sinalau Bakas" which means Smoked Wild Boar in Sabahan. It was delicious! I expected the meat to be hard but no it was tender! Not too much seasoning so you can taste the original wild boar taste which was actually similar to pork but better.

See the amount of wild hog meat... The villagers hunt themselves.

Very juicy and yummy!

We also ordered this ubi kayu. It tasted good, but there's a bitter aftertaste which I don't like.

Desa Dairy Farm

Actually Desa Dairy Farm was quite disappointing. It doesn't look like New Zealand at all la... Not much things to do here... Then again, there's no other things to do at Kundasang also... So might as well spend the day feeding cows and goats, watching the cow milking process, eating yoghurt ice cream...

Here's one of the very rare group photos (one that full house) we taken at Kundasang. Wah... Not bad wor my pose hahaha.

The beautiful clouds we saw on the way to our dinner place, taken out of car window.

Taken with the Sunset Scene Mode on my camera.
We had our dinner at 89 Station Restaurant. It sells delicious and cheap chinese dishes. The boss was also friendly. The restaurant closes early though, we were lucky because when we were leaving we actually met a university batch mate who just arrived and the boss told them they were not receiving orders anymore. It was only around 8 PM I guess.

At Kundasang we stayed at CMC homestay which was run by a Sabahan girl called Sabrina. She's very sweet and nice. Welcomed us with a big smile and showed us around the place. We had the whole place to ourselves because there were no other guests that day. The place was clean, cozy and felt like home. There were card and board games, TV, guitar, piano... Too bad we had too little time there, it was a great place to relax and chill. If we had more time at night, it would be fun to star gaze at the courtyard with swings and fairy lights. But no... we had to sleep early for the hike tomorrow...

Sabrina really went beyond her job, we asked whether we can borrow superglue to fix JY's shoes but she couldn't find one at the place. So she actually went to buy one for us! Then before we left, she also gave us a bar of chocolate with a heart-warming note :)

So, highly recommend this CMC homestay if you're staying at Kundasang. The water was also very hot which was life saving in the cold weather there!

The next day was the Mount Kinabalu hike and it would be another post. But before I end this post, the day after the Mount Kinabalu hike, we actually went to Fatt Kee Seafood Restaurant @ Hilltop for famous Fish Noodle Soup. The tomato soup base was very rich! Everytime I look at its picture I will miss it!

Fish Bee Hoon Soup

For this trip I roughly counted the expenses. I spent a total of RM1640 (including the Mount Kinabalu package of RM600)! And we actually got the air tickets at a rather expensive price of RM362.
