Malacca Food Trip - Day 1

3:16 PM

This post will be a written memory of my first and possibly last trip with my uni mates, and also as a food trip guide for a friend who requested for it.

Read Malacca Food Trip -Day 2 here.

So, I finally went on a trip with friends! I'd actually thought this trip would be cancelled last minute just like the other trips planned previously. That's how much I lost hope in planning trips you know... It's like my destiny or something =.=

Well, this time round I was not the one who planned the trip. Thanks to VV who did a great job in making the itinerary. Such effort deserves to be "published" lol.

An excerpt of the itinerary lol.

We only started planning the trip after our last OSCE, that was just 4 days before the date of the trip! Our trip fell on 14th April (Tuesday). 3 days before the trip, we booked a family room (two queen-sized beds) for one night at Regalo Hotel through Agoda. The price was quite cheap each person only have to pay around RM 26.

OK, lets get to the point (which is the food), shall we?

Sorry no actual pictures taken of the "makan" places because I don't have a proper camera and my phone camera sucks. If you want to know how the places look like perhaps you can try Google :P The food photos were mostly taken from my friend's Oppo smartphone haha. I did take food photos at first... but after a while I just lazy to take lol. So, you can easily differentiate the ones I took from my friend's by judging the resolution (and the photo size) =.= And uh... forgive me I don't really know how to promote food so I'll just show pictures with some pathetic descriptions =.=

All the places we visited are famous spots for Malacca food trip. The places were written in the order we visited:

...::: Ole Sayang Restaurant :::...

It's a restaurant specialised in nyonya food. I saw pictures of Babas and Nyonyas dating back to don't-know-what year lol. There was even a picture of a man who looked like a "pegawai" in don't-know-what dynasty of China. Apparently they were the ancestors of the restaurant owner.

I guess the star food of this Restaurant Ole Sayang is the Ayam Pong Teh.

Ayam Pong Teh

It's chicken with sweet and salty gravy. There's nothing that I ate before that tasted like it. It's refreshing (I'll probably use this word several times in this post lol). It's quite good I must say, the one dish that I liked the most among the three dishes that we ordered. Probably because I like sweet and salty food lol. Awww but I felt I didn't eat enough because we only ordered all the dishes in small portion because we wanna save our stomach space for other foods! 不过瘾啊 ! I think it would be a satisfying meal if we eat until our stomachs are full!

We also ordered the Sambal Udang Petai. No photo because I guess we'd forgotten to take. I'm not a fan of petai although I still eat it and the sambal was too spicy for me. There's a sourness in the sambal that I didn't like. The prawns were small prawns and nothing special about it. Anyway, some of my friends liked it.

Next dish is Telur Cincaluk.

Telur Cincaluk

It's just fried egg with clams (lala). The clams were so small and few that I almost didn't know there were clams lol. The egg was a tad too salty for me but I think it still tasted quite nice.

Overall, the food was not bad though I think it's quite expensive considering the portion and ingredients. Well, nyonya foods are expensive, aren't they? Especially the famous ones. I'm sure there are other nice nyonya dishes that we missed out because we didn't really do research on this restaurant. Oh, BTW you can't share rice in this restaurant because they count by heads. The upside is the rice is refillable!

...::: East and West Rendezvous Cafe :::...

This cafe is famous for it's Nyonya Cendol and Nyonya "Chang" (rice dumplings).

Nyonya Cendol & Nyonya Chang

The Nyonya Cendol has an adequate amount of cendol and red beans. The ice was shaved to a fine texture and matched perfectly with the "gula Melaka" (sugar from coconut tree?). I always like cendol ^^ No matter nice or not lol. But, everyone likes this cendol ok.

The Nyonya "Chang" was nice also. It's different from the normal brown colour "Ba Chang" (Meat dumplings) so some people may not like it. I don't know what ingredients they used to make the fillings. I'm sure they used "gula Melaka" because they like to use it for everything lol. VV didn't like the special indescribable taste of the Nyonya Chang. I quite like the taste though so the next day before we left Malacca I take-away three for my family.

Nyonya Chang

Making of Nyonya Chang

Hmm... I'm quite 有缘 with this restaurant actually, if I didn't remember wrongly. Long time ago, my family and I went to Malacca and we simply wanted to find a place for lunch. We anyhow stumbled upon this restaurant. We ate their Nyonya Chang and it was LOVE AT FIRST BITE. I'm quite sure it's the same restaurant lol. Ever since, I always have a good impression towards Nyonya Chang and the impression was that Nyonya Changs are delicious. So, technically, this is the second time I eat the Nyonya Chang. I found the taste just normal, not bad. But still, first impression means a lot I guess so Nyonya Chang will forever be extraordinarily tasty in my mind... until I actually eat it lol. Or perhaps there are better Nyonya Changs somewhere out there.

...::: Pin Pin Hiong Restaurant:::...

Then we walked to Pin Pin Hiong (品品香) restaurant which is also located within Jonker Street. It's famous for oyster omelette only so five of us only ordered a plate of omelette lolol. Didn't even order drinks wtf.

Oyster omelette

It was DELI-CIOUS. The omelette was very fluffy/bouncy/Q/however-you-say-it. You can see from the picture the omelette was very juicy! The amount of oysters also "ngam ngam". I would love it if my stomach wasn't full that time coz I can't stand the oily smell when I'm full. EY highly recommends it and said no other oyster omelette could beat it's number one place in his heart. Maybe I'm used to my mum's less salt cooking I feel the oyster egg a tad too salty. But still, now as I'm writing about it, I wish I can eat it now at this second!

...::: Lung Ann Refreshments restaurant :::...

Then, we walked a few steps to Lung Ann Refreshments restaurant which was just beside Pin Pin Hiong I think! It's famous for Hainan satay but unfortunately that day they only have pork satay which was a disappointment. Pork satay just tasted very weird. The pork smell was really strong >.<. We all didn't like it. Luckily we only ordered 10 sticks lol! VV said the Hainan chicken satay they ate last time was good.

Pork satay

...:: San Shu Gong :::...

San Shu Gong (三叔公) wasn't on our itinerary but some of them want to buy souvenirs and also of course the air-cond was another reason lol. We bought a durian cendol because they tried before and it was nice.

Durian cendol

Umm... The durian taste was strong... and there were a few jelly cubes and "atap seeds" in it. The cendol however was so little. Not bad la worth trying if you've never tried before. Remember to fully stir the ice upside-down until the whole ice turns brown in colour because if not you won't fully get the taste of the durian until you reach the bottom.

...::: Taste Better One-Bite Durian Puffs :::...

The durian puffs were not bad. Although it's a bit too big to fit into your mouth but I think it's only satisfying if you do it in one bite! It's something like durian ice cream in a puff, sweet and cooling. We also tried the durian white coffee and it was weeeeeeird for some of us.

Durian puff

...::: Klebang coconut shake :::...

Then we went to try the Klebang coconut shake that many people raved about! Luckily we didn't have to queue. In fact, we never had to queue at all throughout this trip because we went on weekdays and not holiday. Yeah~

Klebang coconut shake

OK at first the coconut shake was very refreshing because duh it's an ice shake... and also because I've never tried coconut shake that has coconut flesh bits in it! Quite nice... But I don't fancy the vanilla ice cream... So perhaps if I ordered the one without ice cream then it would be just nice. I really sien of ice cream already... I couldn't finish my coconut shake and had to ask EY, our "tong sampah" to finish it haha.

I think after coconut shake we went to the hotel to check-in.

...::: Longkang Siham :::...

Then we went to eat the "Longkang Siham" at Jalan Bunga Raya. I was a bit hesitant to try the "siham" (cockles) because they are always known as dirty and what's more, we will be eating at a back alley (I don't think I saw any longkang [drain] there). Well, I didn't want to regret so I ate it anyway!

The surroundings

Just to show where the things are cooked.

Siham

It was very nice! The "siham" were half-cooked I think and it was a whole new refreshing sensation when we combined the "siham" with their special chili sauce. I ate until my hands were covered in blood like I just did a murder =.= because we had to open the shells ourselves. Luckily somebody brought wet tissues because as far as I know there was no sink or pipe to wash hands there, unless you go to the washroom inside the Madam King's departmental store which was located nearby.

Oh, we also ordered "lala" (clams) but it was just okay. The "siham" and the chili sauce is the perfect match!

Lala
(Here we forgot to take pic until there's only last one left so SOLO shot for this lucky lala!)

We decided to give up the famous "popiah" (nearby Longkang Siham and Madam King) because the popiah has pork lard and none of us really like pork lard. Anyway if you want to know, an uncle is selling it at a moving stall.

...::: Putu Piring Tengkera :::...

Then we went to hunt for Putu Piring. It's located somewhere along Jalan Tengkera. It is not a shop lot, the Chinese family (or Baba Nyonya?) are just selling the Putu Piring in front of their house. We almost missed it! Luckily my eyesight very sharp lol. We didn't eat it on the spot, instead we brought it to the Satay Celup place, almost left it there and then brought back to the hotel as supper. Hahaha it's like we had to go through some obstacles to eat this Putu Piring!!! So, how would the Putu Piring taste like? Would it disappoint us?!

Putu Piring

No, it didn't disappoint us! It had the right level of sweetness of "gula Melaka" and the texture was soft very nice to eat hehe. I think it was the favourite food of VV in this Malacca trip because she kept raving about it the next day but can't eat it because they only start selling Putu Piring in the evening.

...::: Ban Lee Siang Satay Celup :::...

Capitol Satay Celup is the one that has long queues but we didn't go that shop. Instead, we went to Ban Lee Siang which is a Satay Celup restaurant frequently visited by the locals. They said the Ban Lee Siang siblings had a fight so the restaurant split into two. The two Ban Lee Siang restaurants were just beside each other but they said the original one was still better.

When we were there, only one Ban Lee Siang restaurant was opened. We didn't know which restaurant was the original one at that time. But after we had our dinner there, my friends said it was not that nice and so we assumed the closed one was the original restaurant. So, tips for you who are reading this, the restaurant located at the right side probably is the original one.

Anyway, to me all Satay Celup tastes the same =.=  I feel this one same with the one I ate at Klang hahaha.

Satay Celup

There we ended our day-1 food journey!

Back to the hotel, we were exhausted and I just felt like slacking. We just played with our phones and then after that we just gave up using the hotel's super-slow-almost-non-existent WiFi and watched a movie together called "The Railway Man" on the Fox Movie channel. Hahaha the movie was okay just about an ex-world war II soldier suffering from trauma. The movie was very slow-paced I felt like sleeping.

But when it's really the time to sleep I couldn't sleep! I somehow expected it already because last time during the hospital posting I also had trouble sleeping! I also considered sleeping on the couch but they forbid me lol. Well, at least this time was better than last time. EY and VV sharing a bed while SP,YX and I sharing a bed. I hardly had space to move my legs =.=

Then I guess I fell asleep somehow but around 1AM I woke up because other hotel customers came back and we could hear their shower, talking and TV sounds =.= I also woke up at around 4AM because my nose was blocked suddenly and I had phlegm. So, I woke up and went into the toilet to blow my nose and then sat on the bed while waiting for my nose block to subside. I think I could still hear people talking by that time. The soundproofing of the hotel really sucked. I think everyone of us didn't have a good sleep. VV offered her pillow to us because we lack of one pillow.

Oh yeah, when I was awake around 4AM. Suddenly, I heard two loud farts and I immediately thought they came from EY hahaha. I didn't laugh or anything because my dad does it all the time hahaha. The next morning, VV told us she was actually awaken by the two loud farts LOL and EY had no idea. Then VV gave EY a nickname called "他妈的放两个大屁的男子" LOL because before that EY kept saying Annabelle is "他妈的在看啥的公仔" (谷阿莫发明的lol)

Photo-bombed intentionally by a creepy looking mask. Here's where the "他妈的在看啥的公仔" joke started.
